Chosen Solution
Hi I have a Mid 2014 15” Macbook Retina Pro with a 250GB internal SSD. As I use an external HDD too often I’d like to upgrade the internal SSD to something like 500GB or preferably 1TB. I know this is possible but which company provides the most reliable replacement SSD ? Reliability is key as I spend almost half the year working away from home with no repair shops within 100 miles.
There are three different directions you can go: Going with an original Apple replacement SSD (Samsung) Review this great guide The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs - While the most expensive its what Apple had designed.Using a 3rd party designed SSD for Apple systems either OWC or Transcend - Both offer good products. The older OWC drives ran on the warm side. The newer units run cooler. I’ve used both and while still expensive are cheaper than going with an Apple SSD.Using an Apple to M.2 adapter and a M.2 SSD - I personally don’t recommend this solution. Here’s the iFxit guide you’ll need to follow: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2014 SSD Replacement Fixit also sells the OWC SSD’s which you’ll find listed in the guide.
