Hi, My MacBook Pro recently came up with this problem: It suddenly shut down, and when I tried to boot it back up, it had horizontal grey stripes over screen. Now there are two options: Restore HD and another option. Would Restore HD - wipe my hard drive? Unfortunately I’m not very tech savvy I didn’t back up my information. After hours of trying to fix the problem myself, I turn to you. Is there any way to fix this issue or at the least get my data back by taking out the memory and sticking it into an external enclosure? Thank you, A Update (09/07/2016) Thank you so much for your answers! They are wonderful. However I have more information. When I load the computer up it makes a large beeping noise, goes black and shuts down. I heard that you could connect it to another computer and by pressing the key “T” you could view your information on the other computer? Has anyone tried this method? Am I missing any information to make this work? What kind of cable do I need to do the data transfer? My hope is that I can plug the computer into another one and into an external hard drive - where I would transfer my information from my troubled computer onto the hard drive. Any suggestions?

From the sounds of it your drive is having problems ;-{ If you really need whats on your drive you don’t want to mess with it as anything you do right now will likely make it worse! OK what to do here? First you’ll either need to find someone with the skills to replace your drive and place your old drive into an external case so you can access it after you get your system up and working. Or, you can do this your self! Here’s how: You’ll need a new drive and this series has issues with the drive cable so I would replace that as well. Here is the parts you’ll want MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable - Apple P/N 923-0104. As for the drive I would recommend this one: [http://www.seagate.com/consumer/upgrade/laptop-solid-state-hybrid-drive/.You’ll need a set of tools like this one: Classic Pro Tech Toolkit and you’ll need either a case to hold your original drive or this: Startech 2.5" SATA to USB adapterFollow this IFIXIT guide to open your system to remove your old drive and put in the new cable and drive: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Early 2011 Hard Drive Cable Replacement.Lastly you’ll need to connect your system to a network to then prep and install a fresh copy of OS onto your new drive using Internet Recovery. Here’s an Apple T/N that explains it: About OS-X Recovery.

Have you tried hooking up an external display? That can narrow down the possibilities, display or logic board. I’ve never heard of a bad HDD causing display issues, but have had broken, pinched cables, bad logic board. bad screen, but not a bad HDD causing it. try the external display & tell me the results It sounds like a bad video chip. I’ve had that happen twice and both times it was a bad video chip. I used eBay to find a company that specializes in repairing boards with that problem and both times it worked fine after that. But do try and inspect for loose or damaged cables first.
