If my iPod Classic sits without playing for over about 15 minutes, it crashes and I have to do a hard reset to use it. It is really annoying as every time I do to use it, I must first hard reset. The problem does not occur if it is playing, only when it sits idle without playing. I have replaced the battery, but the problem is still there.
It sounds like a firmware problem, something to do with waking from sleep, it can’t for some reason, I would plug it into the computer (back up the songs if necessary) and rollback to an older firmware and reinstall the newest firmware and see if the problem is fixed. P.S. When the firmware is rolled back do some testing and load a few songs on it and see if it still crashes, that way if it doesn’t you can at least use it on the older firmware…
Mark, I have the same issue you do, my ipod constantly goes into deep sleep. Were you able to fix it?
