For context, I have the MBP 2017 13in. This issue happened today where I noticed whenever I open my laptop past 90 degrees, the colors become very high in contrast. Anything with color becomes “pale” if you can imagine. However, this only happens from 90 degrees to its full extension. However, when I bring the lid back to 90 degrees all the way to close, the colors revert back to normal. It only happens when the lid is extended further than 90 degrees. Has anyone run into this issue before? I’ve tried restarting VRAM/PRAM, turning auto adjustment on/off, but nothing seems to be the trick. I’m afraid it might be a flex cable issue. I know that Apple has a service repair for 2016 models, but given my MDP is a 2017, are there any alternatives besides forking over $600 for a new LCD? Unfortunately I don’t have Apple Care.

The LCD flatflex is damaged. There is no way to change the cable, so you need the entire display assembly. The guide to change the display yourself can be found here. However, what I would try and do first is get a warranty exception at the Genius Bar. Make an appointment with the Genius Bar and show them the issue, but also act disgusted that the machine failed in 2-3 years because of a defective design in the pursuit of saving 2mm at the expense of reliability. If you can push them hard enough and don’t back off, you should be able to get it. That said, you may still need to either split the cost with the store or pay full price to get it done with Apple or do it yourself. Unless you make them eat the cost of their bad design, they won’t learn.
