why does the mower bog out when you put the deck down
I’m not sure why the engine speed would bog down when “lowering” the deck unless the grass is overly long or the blades are dull. If the grass is excessively long then an initial cut at max height may be necessary before lowering the deck and doing a second finish cut. Honda riding mowers are however noted for the engine bogging down momentarily as the PTO lever is “engaged”. The blade brake a.k.a. pto brake remains momentarily engaged as the pto drive itself is engaged. In other words, there is an overlap that puts a load on the engine during the transition. This is a safety feature so that at no point can the blades free wheel. Either they are stopped completely or they are turning with the necessary safety shutdowns activated. (no in between) The best results and longest pto life seems to come when the pto lever is engaged quickly, without hesitation, at about 50% throttle. Hope this helps, my ‘87 HT3810 is still going strong on the original pto after 26 yrs.
