Why Is My Ipod Not Picking Up Any Wi Fi Ipod Touch 1St Generation

I got this iPod Touch (1g) and it doesn’t pick up any wi-fi, even if I’m one foot away. My friend’s iPod gets a signal, but mine doesn’t at all. I upgraded to 3.1.2, but it still doesn’t work. Any suggestions? Thanks
