My laptop will come on and I can see my cursor and move sometimes, however the screen is basically black with a little illumination behind it.

so many different possible reasons. Start by holfing the Fn Key on your keyboard, then repeatedly press the brightness up Fkey on your keyboard. this will raise the brightness, if your settings are just set to minimum next, you could have a blown cacklight in the LCD. you will need to replace the screen for this. If that doesnt work, you could have a problem with the Backlight Module. (some screens have these integrated into them, and some have them external. if it is external you may need to fix the issue that way. your screen could need its cable replaced. Screen signals are sent to the screen through a cable that connects it to the motherboard. this signal may be interrupted, and not sending the backlight any voltage. You could have a broken connector. the cable mentioned above needs to connect to both the motherboard, and screen, via integrated connectors. these could need to be replaced. The board could not be processing the screen correctly. if it is the case, you will be looking into replacing the Logic board.
