It is common when you have a dirty potentiometer. That is the volume control. If you don’t want to open the speaker up, you could try turning the volume to maximum and minimum a good few times to try to clean any dirt of the carbon surface. If you wish to open the speaker and remove the board you could strip the POT and give it a spray with switch cleaner. Again turn it to maximum volume and minimum a few times after applying the switch cleaner. The last alternative is to replace the POT.
