My iPhone was partially submerged for about 15 to 20 minute while canoeing and would not work at all when recovered. Storing it in a silica-gel desiccant for 3 days returned it to full function except after recharging the battery it will lose its power gradually over about 12 to 18 hours without using it. Will replacing the battery solve the problem? Opening it up after drying revealed no moisture or obvious damage.

I have worked on a ton of water damaged phones… I would take it to a phone repair store to get a ultrasonic acid water treatment bath.. even though you took the right precautions by drying it out, their will still be corrosion on the connectors on the inside of the phone. I would sell the phone and look for a new one. Any amount of water to a phone is bad..

I’d replace the battery. Batteries are very volatile to heat and moisture. Especially in the 5 series. I have seen batteries fail quicker than those of the 4 series. The water damage may have accelerated this process.
