Why When I Turn On Flight Mode Do I Still Receive Notifications Iphone 6

Bought Apple I phone 6 just over 4 years ago. At night I set the alarm clock and turn onto flight mode so I do not get disturbed with emails/ notifications etc, had no problem at all, last 2 nights I have gone to flight mode and for some reason the notifications come through. Can somebody please help/ advise?
