Hey guys.. as the title describes, my PS3 won’t read discs after I upgraded it’s internal HDD to a Western Digital 1TB HDD. Prior HDD was a Hitachi 160GB HDD. I had success in installing the new drive and Sony PS3 version 4.88 firmware, along with my game data, but then when I went to pop in a disc game, it won’t read it at all. And there were some funny noises the disc drive made this time around when I popped the disc in. Since my initial purchase of the console off eBay, I was made aware that something was rolling around inside the console but was told it had no affect on playing, which it didn’t have any problem for the last three months I’ve had this console, but since I upgraded my HDD today and upon realizing it wouldn’t read any of my discs now, I took this chance to open up the console again and open up the Blu-ray disc drive to clean the laser to see if that would do the trick AND… I happened to find the thing that was rolling around inside; one single penny lol. But the issue is that my disc drive isn’t functioning as intended and I don’t know what to do after having cleaned the laser with isopropyl alcohol and a Kleenex. Please help! SOLVED

Can you hear or see the laser assembly moving like its trying to read the disc (don’t look at the laser light directly, bad for the eyes)? Is there an error on screen like can’t read disc or no disc inserted or….? If the mechanical aspects are functioning, I’d run remove the laser unit and run a resistance test on it, adjust or replace if needed. There are plenty of tutorials on that. If the mechanical parts are NOT functioning then you have a larger problem that could be the result of a number of different things.
