I have a MacBook pro a1278 2011 the usb ports will charge my galaxy but not my iPhone will light up jumb drive but will not read data

USB has two parts The data lines and the power lines. The data line ID the device thats been plugged in (Apple Vs other). Lets see if resetting the PRAM and SMC fixes things: How and when to reset your Mac’s PRAM and SMC Your MacBook Pro is limited to 500 mA (milliamps) at 5 V (Volts) in the USB ports your system has. When a Apple device is attached (iPhone/iPad/iPod) the USB port can offer upto 1100 mA at 5V! The logic which controls this in your system is clearly having a problem! If resetting the PRAM & SMC doesn’t help you’ll need to do a bit to diagnose what’s happening here using a in-line power meter like this one  USB Mini Voltmeter so you can see the power your system is offering out. You can also use the System Report under ‘About this Mac’ looking at the USB section and drilling down to the given port (hub) to see what it tells you.
